South Bend Immigration has grown considerably over recent years. many are foreign-born residents living in mainly South Bend, Indiana and surrounding areas. The United States Census uses the term “foreign-born residents” to refer to anyone who is not a U.S. citizen at birth in addition to the illegal aliens currently present in the United States. An estimated four percent of Indiana residents were born outside the United States. Of that foreign-born population, about 73,787 people are naturalized U.S. citizens. About 34% of Indiana’s foreign residents have entered the country in the past five years.
The United States Immigration Services estimated that Indiana had about 45,000 illegal foreigners in recent years. This is less than one percent of the total population, which is considerably less than the nationwide rate of 2.5%. Information from the Pew Hispanic Center placed the number of unauthorized immigrants living in the surrounding area of South Bend between fifty and eighty thousand.
Half of the population came from South America. In fact, over 44% of Indiana’s immigrants were born in Mexico. The five other countries that follow Mexico for Indiana foreign-born residents are of Indian, Chinese, German and Korean descent with the number of immigrants ranging from seven to around eleven thousand.
