Amusement parks should be a place of fun and frolic for a child. They should be a place where kids can play and be kids in safe environment but that is not always the case. In a study released by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), an average of 7,000 people a year are treated in emergency rooms for injuries sustained in amusement park ride accidents in the U.S. The CPSC considers that a very low number considering that an estimated 270 million plus people visit American amusement parks each year. Of these, 17.9% occur to children 10-14 years old, 12.6% occur to children 5-9 years old, 13.8% occur to children 15-19 years old, and 6.3% occur to children 0-4 years old. The CPSC notes that the leading cause of these accidents is rider misconduct. However, that still leaves a number of accidents accountable to employee error, lack of maintenance, and faulty equipment.

The study also sites that females make up 60.8% of injury victims and they are about 1.5 times more likely to be injured than males who make up 39.2% of injury victims. Fixed-site rides accounted for about 2/3 of the total number of injuries.
